A Good Week

January 23rd, 2010

Every day is good, just to be alive and in good health; therefore, every week is good. But some days and weeks are better than others.

On Monday, Jan 18 I went to Orlando, FL to attend the Osceola Visionary, Inc. annual Martin Luther King dinner. A friend plans this event every year and I was the speaker last year. Therefore, I wanted to be supportive of her this year. It also gave us a chance to visit. My husband and I spent the night with her, returning to Sarasota the next day. I got back in time to attend my Howard alumni club meeting. The club is planning its annual scholarship luncheon for March 6.
Wednesday, we attended at great performance of the Westcoast Black Theater Troupe where the cast performed The Motown 60 Revue. Nothing like those songs of the 60s: The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas and many more. They did a great job.

Thursday was the day of my interview on FOX4 Morning Blend, Cape Coral, FL which aired on Jan 22. That evening we attended an art show of local artists; dinner Friday night with friends; my book signing at Barnes & Noble, Sarasota, FL on Sat., Jan 23.

In the midst of all the traveling, I spent time planning for various engagements which will occur over the next month. Thank goodness for my Blackberry! I was even able to get in one day of golf.

It’s been a busy week and I have enjoyed it all.

My Inaugural Book Event

January 14th, 2010

What a wonderful day it was yesterday and such hospitable hosts for the first book event on my book tour! The students, administration and staff at Greens Farms Academy, a private day school in Westport, CT exceeded my expectations as they welcomed me to their campus.

The day began with a student assembly for the school’s Martin Luther King celebration. With a mixture of instrumental music, group songs, solos and recitations, my keynote speech, “Reflecting on the Values of Dr. King” was considered a central part of the celebration. The one-hour event was quite impressive. The students, particularly those from the lower school, responded well to my presentation. For more exposure for me and the students, I then met with 5th graders who were full of questions. The questioning had to be brought to an end in order for me to go to my destination – lunch with LEAD students, a group that works for and advocates diversity.

After a scrumptious dinner at Martel’s in Fairfield, CT, I returned to the school for a discussion and book signing. Attendance was excellent. I was pleasantly surprised to see many Harvard Business School graduates there as well as a classmate from my Howard University days, who was a student in the Department of Business where I was also a student.

My trip ended the next day after a taped interview with Gwen Edwards on News 12 CT for her OUR LIVES show which will air the weekend of January 23.

It was a great way to start my book tour.

The Joy of Christmas

January 5th, 2010

The New Year has started and most that made resolutions have probably broken them already. I never make them.

The holiday was great! We spent it in Richmond, VA (our primary home), had lots of folk for dinner Christmas Day and the Day after (siblings, children, nieces & friends). Not a real problem for me because my husband does 90% of the cooking. He thoroughly enjoys cooking and I enjoy being the one who tries his new dishes. Both daughters were home from NYC for 5 days with a 3-year-old granddaughter and a 3-year-old grandson. The grands are about 2 months apart in age. What a lively household! They were a joy to have around. To add to the joy my cousin/ best friend from childhood spent 6 days with me. We shared many experiences from childhood.

For me that’s what Christmas is all about – giving, sharing and giving thanks for all that I have and too often take for granted.
Happy New Year to all. May it be a healthy and prosperous one!
